Walking the streets, searching for that certain something – an incongruous juxtaposition of people and everyday objects, a compelling marriage of light and shadow, the passion, fear, love and despair of everyday life – observing, experiencing, and perhaps capturing some small slice of the magic and wonder that exists in our world. That’s what I try to photograph. The pictures in this book were taken during my travels over a period of 5 years. They also represent a period when I returned to photography after a long hiatus and I moved from holiday snaps to a more considered approach.

In May 2008, the photographers of LUMEN, an independent photographers’ cooperative, travelled to West Cork, Ireland. This book presents the highlights of this visit. The pictures were taken over 5 days.

LUMEN was founded in 2007 by three photographers who sought a fresh alternative to the established photographic workshop movement. Members participate not only as photographers, but also as critics, mentors and project managers for each other.

The city of Zürich, Switzerland has been my home for the last seven years. During this time I’ve come to appreciate its many charms and overlook the minor irritations. A major part of Zürich’s livability is the proximity of water with the Lake of Zürich and the two rivers, the Sihl and the Limmat, which flow through central Zürich providing green-lung and recreational areas.

My intention with this series of pictures is to present my personal perspective of how the people of Zürich live with and relate to the rivers – especially the mundane everyday details we overlook, as well as the traces we leave behind as we work, play, love, rejoice and grieve.

In April 2007, I travelled to the Mediterranean island of Sicily to take part in a photography workshop with Magnum photographer David Alan Harvey. As we travelled across Southern Sicily and shot in the towns of Ispica, Enna, Barrafranca and Scicli, I relished the passion Sicilians exhibited when celebrating their faith. From the restrained stateliness of Enna’s formal processions to the controlled chaos seen in Barrafranca and Scicli, Easter in Sicily is a wondrous experience.

Foreign corporations are queuing up, building contacts and relationships, waiting for further liberalisation. Those who lost property during the revolution wait to press their claims for compensation. Is the spirit of the revolution still alive?
