Berlin 20 Years After the Wall

In August 1961, the leaders of the German Democratic Republic erected a barrier in Berlin to prevent emigration to the West. After 28 years and at least 98 people killed attempting to escape, in November 1989 East Germans were allowed once again to visit West Berlin which led to the reunification of Berlin and Germany in 1990. What is Berlin today after 20 years of reunification? View gallery »

Nicosia – Still Divided

In 1964, following inter-communal violence between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, UN peacekeepers established a buffer zone (”the Green Line”) in Cyprus which ran directly through the capital Nicosia. In 1974, after a coup in Cyprus, Turkey invaded northern Cyprus citing the need to protect Turkish Cypriots. Today Cyprus is part of the EU but the country, and Nicosia, remains divided. Danza Teatro Retazos

Danza Teatro Retazos is a modern dance company based in Old Havana, directed by Isabel Bustos. In November 2006, I photographed them for 5 days. During this time I observed them train, rehearse and perform in public. I also visited Isabel and 4 dancers at home, for a brief experience of their lives away from the studio. View gallery »

Impressions of Cuba

49 years after the revolution illness has forced Fidel to step down as President of Cuba. Foreign corporations are queuing up, building contacts and relationships, waiting for further liberalisation. Those who lost property during the revolution wait to press their claims for compensation. Is the spirit of the revolution still alive? Or are Cubans merely paying lip service while waiting for the old guard to fade away? View gallery »

Day of the Revolutionary Armed Forces

On December 2nd 1956, the Granma landed in Cuba, bringing Fidel Castro back from exile in Mexico, together with his brother Raúl, Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos. Just over 2 years later, Batista fled Havana. In 2006, a few months before the 50th Anniversary of the Granma landing, Fidel mysteriously fell ill. Many were wondering if he would appear on this important occasion, or even if he would ever be seen in public again. View gallery »

Easter Passion

After having been enchanted by an Easter parade in Mallorca, I resolved to explore this tradition further. The opportunity arose to travel to Sicily where Easter ceremonies have been influenced by Spanish customs. From Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday we moved between the towns of Ispica, Enna, Barrafranca and Scicli, each of which have their own take on celebrating Easter. View gallery »

5 Days in West Cork

The western, more rural part of County Cork has a special magic, charming visitors with warm hospitality and rugged beautiful coastal landscapes. These pictures were taken over 5 days as part of a LUMEN project, in and around the towns of Baltimore, Skibbereen, Clonakilty and the island of Cape Clear. View gallery »

The City I Live In

In 2002 I moved from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Zurich, Switzerland…a big change in my life…but also the stimulus for me to start taking pictures again after losing interest when I was a teenager. A new city and a very different culture kept my eyes sharp. These pictures are a sample of what I’ve experienced here. View gallery »
