Nicosia – Still Divided
In 1964, following inter-communal violence between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, UN peacekeepers established a buffer zone (”the Green Line”) in Cyprus which ran directly through the capital Nicosia. In 1974, after a coup in Cyprus, Turkey invaded northern Cyprus citing the need to protect Turkish Cypriots. Today Cyprus is part of the EU but the country, and Nicosia, remains divided.
